SAI Calculator

The Department of Education uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) to collect information and determine an applicant’s Student Aid Index (SAI) by conducting a "need analysis" based on the student's information. The SAI measures the financial strength of the student's family and is used to determine the student's eligibility for federal student aid (grants and loans). Other agencies, such as states and schools, may use this information to award other types of aid. They will determine if the student is eligible for school or state aid, in addition to federal aid.

The SAI Calculator page in Anthology Student enables you to calculate the student's SAI. The page reflects the questions on the FAFSA for award year 2024-25 and later. The questions are grouped in the collapsible sections.

Access Method

Select the Students tile > select the name in the Students list > expand Financial Aid > select the SAI Calculator tile.

Procedure to Calculate the SAI

1. Select a Student and navigate to the SAI Calculator tile.

2. Expand each of the following sections and specify the applicable details.

   Select the icon to expand a section or select the Expand All link to expand all sections at once.

   You must enter the required data (*) before proceeding to the next step (or set of questions).

   Anthology Student retains the Controlled Unclassified Information/Specified Tax (CUI//SP-TAX) labeling of imported ISIR data. The SAI Calculator page displays banners indicating the beginning and end of the Student Tax Return Information and Parent Tax Return Information sections when these sections contain data. Institutions must ensure the privacy and security of FAFSA data (including FTI) and must obtain FAFSA contributor consent for the disclosure and use of their information.

   Student Information

   Award Year The financial aid award year. Date of Birth The date of birth (DOB) in the format MM/DD/YYYY. Marital Status Select the marital status. Dependency Indicates whether the applicant is a dependent student or an independent student. The parent information and other dependent information fields are disabled when Dependency = Independent.

   Number of People in the Family Number of people in the family. Student State of Legal Residence Specify the reported state of residence for the student or parent. Federal Benefits Received Select Yes or No to indicate whether the student or parent received federal benefits (Medicaid, SNAP, Housing Assistance, etc.). Federal Work-Study Specify the amount of earnings from Federal Work-Study.

   Student Tax Return Information

   Student Tax Filing Status Select the tax filing status of the student or parent. Student Income Earned From Work Specify the income earned from work for the student or parent. Student Spouse Tax Filing Status Select the tax filing status of the student's spouse or parent spouse or partner. Student Spouse Income From Work Specify the income earned from work for the student's spouse or parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse Tax Exempt Interest Income Specify the tax exempt interest income for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse Untaxed Portions of IRA Distribution and Pensions (Excluding Rollover) Specify the untaxed portion of IRA distributions and pensions (excluding rollover) for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) Specify the adjusted gross income (AGI) for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse U.S. Income Tax Paid or Foreign Equivalent Specify the U.S. income tax paid or foreign equivalent for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse Deductible Payments to IRS/KEOGH/Other Specify the deductible payments to an IRS, KEOGH, or Other retirement plan for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse Education Credits Specify the number of education credits for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse Filed Schedule A, B, D, E, F, or H Indicate whether the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner filed schedule A, B, D, E, F, or H. Student/Student Spouse Schedule C Amount Specify the Schedule C amount for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse College Grant and Scholarship Aid Specify the amount of college grant and scholarship aid for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse Foreign Income Exclusion (reported on U.S. Tax Return) Specify the foreign income exclusion reported on the U.S. tax return for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner.

   Student Assets

   Student/Student Spouse Child Support Received Specify the amount of child support received by the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse Cash, savings, and checking accounts Specify the value cash, savings, and checking accounts for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse Net worth of investments, including real estate Specify the net worth of investments, including real estate, for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Student/Student Spouse Net worth of businesses or investment farms Specify the net worth of businesses or investment farms for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner.

   Parent Information

   Marital Status Select the marital status. Date of Birth of Oldest Parent Specify the date of birth of the oldest parent (MM/DD/YYYY). State of Legal Residence Specify the reported state of residence for the student or parent.

   Parent Assets

   Parent/Parent Spouse or Partner Child Support Received Specify the amount of child support received by the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Parent/Parent Spouse or Partner Cash, Savings, and Checking Accounts Specify the value cash, savings, and checking accounts for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Parent/Parent Spouse or Partner Net Worth of Investments, Including Real Estate Specify the net worth of investments, including real estate, for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner. Parent/Parent Spouse or Partner Net Worth of Businesses or Investment Farms Specify the net worth of businesses or investment farms for the student/student's spouse or parent/parent spouse or partner.

3. Select the Calculate SAI button. The Student Aid Index (SAI) value is displayed at the bottom of the page.

   The SAI can be a negative number as low as –$1500. If the SAI result is less than -$1500, the value will be set to -$1500. For parents or students not required to file a tax return in the base year, an automatic –$1500 SAI will be assigned.
